Senior Appointment

Standard Chartered PLC 31 January 2002 Standard Chartered PLC announces that, following the appointment of Mervyn Davies as Group Chief Executive, Peter Wong will become a Director of Standard Chartered Bank, the main operating subsidiary of the Group. He will assume governance responsibility for Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. Peter will also retain responsibility for Consumer Banking in Hong Kong. Mervyn Davies said: 'Peter Wong is an outstanding banker and a respected member of the Hong Kong business community. Having worked closely with him in Hong Kong for four years, I know how fortunate we are to have such a capable person in what are key markets for Standard Chartered.' Mervyn Davies will retain his close ties with Hong Kong and has agreed to remain a member of Hong Kong's Exchange Fund Advisory Committee.
