Standard Chartered PLC was notified on 23 October 2002 that The Prudential
Assurance Company, a company within the Prudential plc group of companies,
ceased to have a major interest in the ordinary shares of US$0.5 each of
Standard Chartered PLC.

Notwithstanding the above, Prudential plc confirmed that certain companies
within its group continue to have notificable interests. Prudential plc itself
holds 34,397,732 Standard Chartered PLC shares of US$0.5 each, a 3.03% holding.
