ACHIEVEMENT OF NINE MILLION CUSTOMERS MILESTONE

Scottish and Southern Energy plc ('SSE') has reached the nine million energy customer mark for the first time. This comprises 5.53 million electricity customers and 3.47 million gas customers.

This means that the total number of SSE's energy customers has grown by over 500,000 since the start of this financial year on 1 April 2008 and has doubled in the seven years since the end of 2001.

SSE is the second largest supplier of electricity and gas in the UK and supplies energy under the Southern Electric, Scottish Hydro Electric, SWALEC and Atlantic brands.

Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of SSE, said:

'I am very pleased that seven successive years of growth has enabled us to double our customer base to nine million. It is no coincidence that we have achieved this while being independently recognised as the customer service benchmark for the rest of the industry.

'When SSE was formed ten years ago, in December 1998, we had 3.2 million customers. Our next goal is to achieve three times that number and in Britain's highly-competitive energy market, we have a clear opportunity to do so.'
