SMITH & NEPHEW PRE-CLOSE BRIEFING DATE

In accordance with its usual practice, Smith & Nephew, the global medical
devices company, will be briefing financial analysts to provide an update
ahead of the close period preceding the Interim Results announcement in August
2001.

This briefing will be by conference call on Monday 25 June 2001 at 3.30pm UK
time/10.30am Eastern Standard Time, and can be heard by audio webcast via the
