Coal Exploration Results, Tanzania

 

Edenville Energy plc (AIM:EDL), the African coal exploration and development company, today announces the results from the first samples collected on the Rukwa Coalfields project in Southern Tanzania.

 

Highlights 

·          Grab samples indicate thermal quality coal at all three deposits

·          Calorific values averaging 7,220 and 8,839 Kcal/kg for Namwele and Mkomolo

·          Low sulphur coal with a high ash contents and thermal characteristics of sub-bituminous to bituminous coals

·          Initial delineation drilling expected to be undertaken Q4 2010

 

A total of 24 grab samples have been collected from surface coal seam exposures at the Rukwa Coalfield project, and analysed at the Madini Laboratory at the Geological Survey of Tanzania in Dodoma. A summary of the results is tabled below;

The results of these grab samples demonstrate the presence of low sulphur coal with a high ash content and thermal characteristics of sub bituminous to bituminous coals. Although this method of sampling is neither indicative of, nor used in mineral resource estimates, the results indicate the coal quality would be suitable for use in power generation and also industrial uses in cement, paper and fertilizer manufacture.

 

Simon Rollason, Chairman of Edenville, commented "These initial results from our field investigations are highly encouraging and confirm the occurrence of thermal quality coal. It is our intention to work towards establishing a maiden resource estimate at Namwele for an open pit coal mine by the end of 2011. We have acquired a number of highly prospective, shallow, coal assets to which Edenville will look to rapidly add value to through exploration and development. Near-Term Operational Strategy

The Edenville field programme is collecting data to identify priority targets for drilling near the various visible occurrences of outcropping coal to indicate and delineate the extent of mineralisation at Namwele by the end of the year. The overall objective of the work programme being implemented will be to evaluate the potential for a large tonnage, open pittable resource with the intention of establishing a maiden resource estimate for the Namwele project in 2011.

 

Geology

The geology of the Namwele-Mkomolo deposits comprises a series of coal hosting Karroo aged sedimentary blocks, which are shallow dipping with a strike length totalling some 9km (trending in a NW direction) and an average 1.5km in width. The average thickness of the coal seams exposed on surface ranges from 30 to 70cms in width, within a package of alternating carbonaceous marl and mudstones over 3 to 5m in thickness, with coal seams dipping at 20o on average. At Namwele-Mkomolo the coal seams are covered by a 5-6m thick overburden, which consists of reworked clays and sediments
