R R Brazilian Power Order

Rolls-Royce PLC 22 November 2000 ROLLS-ROYCE BREAKS INTO BRAZILIAN POWER MARKET Rolls-Royce has won a £30 million contract in the Brazilian power generation market to build a combined cycle power station - the first time its gas turbines will be used by an electrical utility in the country. Under the contract from Electricidade de Portugal (EDP), the national power company of Portugal, Rolls-Royce will build the combined cycle power station at the Petrobras Fertiliser factory site at Fafen in the state of Bahia, using two Rolls-Royce RB211 Dry Low Emission (DLE) gas turbines. EDP's local Brazilian company Energen will operate the plant, which will supply power and steam to the Petrobras facility and to other local industrial users. John Gaskell, President-Energy Business for Rolls-Royce, said: 'This order is an important energy contract for Rolls-Royce and represents a significant breakthrough into the Brazilian market. It also emphasises the strengths of the RB211 for power generation worldwide and follows a series of similar orders announced this year.' Each of the two RB211 units will fire a heat recovery steam generator for the production of steam and also a steam turbine to produce extra power. The complex will be in full production in early 2002 but will meet some of Petrobras' requirements in 2001 through a staged commissioning programme. The project is part of the Brazilian government's 'Thermal Electrical Programme' - a programme to install thermal plant to supplement hydro-power when water levels are low. Rolls-Royce already has a strong presence in Brazil and the company's repair and overhaul facility for gas turbines in Sao Paulo will supply maintenance support for the contract. Rolls-Royce has also set up a project management team based in Sao Paulo to work with Brazilian suppliers and engineering partners on the project.
