                     SPECULATION REGARDING TIOF, MAURITANIA


ROC advises that the following release was made earlier today by Woodside
Petroleum Limited:

'Woodside Petroleum Ltd advises, in response to recent media reports regarding
the Tiof oil field, offshore Mauritania, that it is premature and inappropriate
to speculate on the timing of any declaration of commerciality or any investment
decision for the field.

Decisions on those matters will not be made until after the evaluation of all
necessary appraisal work has been completed.'
