On 17 March 2011 the number of treasury shares transferred to participants in its employee share schemes was 29,422 and not 30,705 as previously stated.  As a consequence of this, all subsequent announcements referring to transactions in own shares understated the balance of treasury shares by 1,283 and overstated the ordinary shares in issue by 1,283 shares.

The position has now been corrected so that as at today's date, Rio Tinto plc holds 13,527,556 ordinary shares as treasury shares.  The total number of ordinary shares in issue (excluding shares held as treasury shares) is 1,515,476,315.
