The third quarter of 2001 saw a solid operating performance by IOC, despite the challenges associated with the commissioning of the first of three lines of the Concentrator Upgrade Project. Poor conditions in IOC's major markets persisted through the quarter, with low utilisation rates of steel mills in North America and Europe. On 27 September 2001, IOC announced that, due to deteriorating market conditions, the reconditioning of the pellet plant in Sept Iles, Quebec, would be suspended. Third quarter 2001 production established a new quarterly record. EXPLORATION Expenditure Total pre-tax exploration expenditure charged to the profit and loss account for the quarter ending 30 September 2001 was US$34 million compared with US$28 million for the comparable quarter in 2000. Total expenditure for the first nine months of 2001 was US$88million compared with US$86 million in the first nine months of 2000. Ongoing Programmes Country Commodity Programme Summary Argentina Borates Exploration drilling was completed at the Tincalayu sodium borate mine in Argentina with new resources outlined in three areas. Indonesia Copper and gold In Block A, exploration and delineation drilling continued on porphyry gold-copper mineralisation within the Ertsberg intrusion and on extensions to the Kucing Liar skarn system on the periphery of the Grasberg intrusion. Turkey Copper and gold Exploration drilling continued at the Cukur Dere gold-copper prospect near Copler in Turkey. North America Copper Exploration drilling commenced at the Resolution copper project in Arizona. South America Copper Exploration drilling continued at the Marcona copper-gold prospect in southern Peru. India Diamonds A kimberlite pipe was discovered in Andhra Pradesh. Surface samples are currently being analysed for diamonds. Brazil Diamonds Seven kimberlite pipes were discovered in the Guarda Mor area of Brazil. Surface samples are currently being analysed for diamonds. Canada Diamonds Three kimberlite pipes were discovered on the Tahera property in the Nunavut region. Drill core analyses from the Anuri pipe indicate that it is significantly diamondiferous. Results are awaited for drill core from the other two pipes. Iran Gold Exploration drilling continued at the Dashkasan prospect in Iran.
