APPOINTMENT OF JAN DU PLESSIS AS SENIOR INDEPENDENT DIRECTOR, MARKS AND SPENCER GROUP PLC

Rio Tinto announces that Jan du Plessis, chairman of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited, has been appointed senior independent director, Marks and Spencer Group plc with effect from 1 March 2012.

This announcement is made pursuant to Listing Rule 9.6.14R.
