Tenet was one of the longest serving directors in the history of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), holding office from 1997 to 2004. Tenet was sworn in as the 18th director of Central Intelligence in July 1997, and under presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush led efforts to rebuild and modernise the CIA's capacity to acquire, analyse and disseminate critical intelligence information. Prior to this appointment he held the positions of CIA deputy director and acting director. He is currently a professor at Washington's Georgetown University, a board director of Guidance Software Inc and L-1 Identity Solutions and sits on the advisory board of The Analysis Corporation. Commenting on the appointment, QinetiQ's chairman Sir John Chisholm said: 'I am extremely pleased to welcome George Tenet to QinetiQ. His extraordinary track record and experience in the fields of intelligence and security are particularly relevant as we continue to focus on the US defence and security market.'
