       Interim Results for the six months to 30 June 2000


Mutual  & Federal Insurance Company Limited ('Mutual & Federal'),
the  South  African general insurance group, in which Old  Mutual
plc  ('Old  Mutual')  has an interest of 51%,  has  today  issued
interim results for the six months to 30 June 2000.

The key highlights of Mutual and Federal's announcement are:

*    Net   premium   income  increased  8%   to   R1,387million
     (R1,284million)

*    Underwriting deficit halved to R31million (R62million)

*    Headline EPS unchanged at 106 cents

*    Interim DPS unchanged at 22 cents
