Director's interests in shares of Old Mutual plc ('the Company')

The Company has been informed, by a letter received today, that Mr W A M
Clewlow, a non-executive director of the Company, has purchased through WAMC
Investments (Pty) Limited, which is a company wholly owned by Mr Clewlow,
28,000 ordinary shares of 10 pence each in the Company ('shares') at a price
of ZAR12.70 each and a further 2,000 shares at a price of ZAR12.60 each. Both
of these purchases took place on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on 10
September 1999.  The total number of shares in which Mr Clewlow is interested
is now 30,700.
