Gleeson(M J)Group PLC 12 September 2000 £350M AWARDS CONSOLIDATE GLEESON AS TOP WATER CONTRACTOR M J Gleeson Group plc, the construction, housebuilding and property group, announces that West of Scotland Water has awarded the contract for the Loch Katrine water supply scheme to Stirling Water, the consortium made up of Gleeson, Thames Water and Montgomery Watson. The estimated value of the project is £75m. Gleeson has also been awarded two long-term partnering contracts by North of Scotland Water Authority having an estimated combined value of more than £37m. The latest awards consolidate Gleeson's position as the leading contractor to the UK water industry. Already this year it has secured or renewed partnering agreements of between three and five years with Thames Water, South West Water and Yorkshire Water and become a framework contractor for Northumbria Water. Together with the two Scottish projects, they will generate turnover of over £350m for Gleeson. Approximately 80 per cent of Gleeson's construction turnover is currently on a partnership basis, thus reducing risk. The West of Scotland contract is to improve the water supply to Glasgow, principally from Loch Katrine (which is situated some 30 miles North of Glasgow, just to the East of Loch Lomond), to comply with the Water Supply (Water Quality) Scotland Regulations 1990. It will entail the provision of new treatment facilities due for completion by June 2005. For the first of the two North of Scotland Water Authority contracts, Gleeson is one of three framework contractors for the Water Quality Undertakings Programme, and will deliver a programme of projects worth more than £31-million by the end of 2006. Covering a central area which includes Tayside, Grampian and an area south of Inverness, the programme includes improvements to seven major treatment works and 17 rural treatment works. In the second contract, Gleeson will work on two sections of the Small Town and Rural Waste Water Treatment Programme, known as Grampian Island and Coastal, to develop solutions with the client for improvements to eight inland works and four coastal works in Aberdeenshire. Worth over £6-million, the contract will be completed by March 2004.
