                     Statement re Mayflower Corporation plc

Melrose PLC ("Melrose") notes the recent announcement by The Mayflower
Corporation plc ("Mayflower") that it has appointed administrators following the
sudden failure of negotiations with its lenders. In the circumstances Melrose no
longer intends to pursue discussions regarding the possible acquisition of the
shares in Mayflower.

Melrose reserves its position to make an offer for the shares in the event that
Mayflower shares are relisted.
