Statement by Mr Philip Green

Mr Philip Green has noted recent press speculation regarding his association
with a possible take-over offer for Marks & Spencer PLC.  Mr Green regularly
reviews investment opportunities in the UK retail sector.  In respect of Marks &
Spencer PLC Mr Green has retained Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette International as
investment bank adviser, although it is too early to determine whether any
proposal, including a possible take-over offer, will be formulated for
presentation to the board of Marks & Spencer PLC.
