                   THE FLEMING JAPANESE INVESTMENT TRUST PLC

                 REPURCHASE OF ORDINARY SHARES FOR CANCELLATION

The Fleming Japanese Investment Trust plc announces that on Friday, 8 February
in the market they purchased for cancellation 950,000 ordinary shares at 168.85p
per share representing 0.5% of the ordinary shares in issue.

The remaining shares in issue following this repurchase total 188,951,919.
