Appt of Investment Manager

              The Fleming American Investment Trust plc
                                  
Following  the  consolidation of Flemings' worldwide  businesses,  a
decision has been taken to locate its investment managers regionally
in  the  relevant  overseas office.  As a result the  Board  of  The
Fleming  American Investment Trust plc today announces that  Fleming
Investment Trust Management Limited has appointed Jonathan Simon  as
lead  investment  manager  of  the  Company's  assets  in  place  of
Alexander Fitzalan Howard.

Jonathan  Simon  is President of Fleming Asset Management  USA.   He
joined  Flemings in 1980 and has extensive experience of US  assets.
He  has  been managing the Fleming Flagship American Fund since  its
inception  in  1988  and the Jardine Fleming American  Growth  Trust
since 1991.

Antony  Gifford will assist Jonathan in managing the assets  of  the
Company  invested  in  US  large cap. stocks  and  Tim  Parton  will
continue  to manage the assets of the Company invested in  US  small
cap stocks.  The investment management of the Company will therefore
be wholly undertaken from Fleming Asset Management USA in New York.

Alexander Fitzalan Howard, who has been managing the assets  of  the
Company  since  October  1998, will be remaining  in  Fleming  Asset
Management  -  London, to manage non US assets on  behalf  of  other
Fleming clients.
