NOTIFICATION OF MAJOR INTERESTS IN SHARES

Johnson Matthey Plc was advised on 28 July 2000 that Schroder Investment
Management Limited and/or its subsidiaries and affiliated companies and unit
trusts under its management, either singularly or in aggregate, have decreased
their holding and now have an interest in 34,469,231 shares, representing some
15.552% of the issued ordinary share capital.
