John Lewis of Hungerford plc ("the Company")

Trading statement

Sales revenues in the first half of the financial year to 31 August 2005 have
been below the Company's expectations for that period. As a result, it is likely
that the Company will report an operating loss for the six months ended 28
February 2005.

The underperformance to date has been due to weaker than expected demand
particularly during the first quarter of the current financial year.
