John Lewis of Hungerford plc ('the Company')

The Company was notified yesterday that Keith Bentley, a non-executive
director, purchased 300,000 ordinary shares of the Company on 16 October 2001,
at a price of 1 pence per share, representing approximately 0.20 per cent of
the issued share capital of John Lewis of Hungerford plc. This increases Mr
Bentley's holding to 370,000 ordinary shares (approximately 0.25 per cent of
the Company's issued share capital).
