Appointment of Executive Director

The Company is pleased to announce the appointment of Malcolm Hepworth to the 
Board of John Lewis of Hungerford plc as a Director.
 
In addition, Malcolm Hepworth will assume the executive responsibilities of 
Managing Director of the Company's business under a consultancy arrangement.  
John Lewis will remain Chairman with executive responsibilities in the areas of 
product design/development and marketing.      

Most recently as Chief Operating Officer of the Co-Operative Wholesale Society 
(including the position of Chief Executive of the Co-Operative Retail Trading 
Group, the national buying group for all independent co-operatives with 
combined annual sales of £5.5 BN), Malcolm successfully initiated a period of 
unprecedented change which included the successful merger of the CWS/CRS 
(the "Group"), the acquisition of the 600 store chain Alldays (adding 
significantly to the Group's existing 1800 stores) and six consecutive 
years of profit growth for the entire Group.  
 
Formerly Malcolm was Operations Director for Gateway Foodmarkets and has spent 
his entire career in retail businesses.  

John Lewis, Chairman, commented:

The Company is also in discussions with Malcolm Hepworth regarding incentive 
option arrangements as to which a further announcement will be made in due 
course.
