The contract is with VDO Kienzle UK Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens VDO Automotive which is the market leader of in car navigation systems which it supplies as factory fit equipment to motor manufacturers including BMW, Land Rover, Renault and Peugeot as well having as an extensive distribution to the aftermarket. Under the terms of the contract, ITIS will integrate and supply real time traffic information to the VDO range of in-car navigation systems. When customers purchase in-car navigation systems, they are provided with a CD ROM which contains all the mapping information. Nick Rendell, Managing Director of VDO says: 'As European market leader in satellite navigation, it is critical that we offer our customers an RDS-TMC solution in the UK. The combination of ITIS' high quality traffic content and their national distribution through Classic FM means that VDO can now offer a complete dynamic navigation solution to new and existing customers' Stuart Marks, Chief Executive of ITIS Holdings, says: 'RDS-TMC is the only true telematics standard that has been integrated with in-car navigation systems. It provides the best channel for the cost effective and timely delivery of traffic information as well as a seamless, multi lingual service that is being adopted throughout Europe. We recognise VDO's leading market position in both the aftermarket for vehicle navigation systems as well as their prominence as a supplier to the automotive sector. RDS-TMC services are already operational in many European countries. In the UK, the availability of satellite navigation as an optional extra on passenger cars has grown by 3900% (full year 1999 to 2000). This year to June over 20% of new vehicles could have had an RDS-TMC enabled satellite navigation system installed either as standard or as an option.
