Contract with Toyota

ITIS Holdings PLC 21 May 2001 21st May 2001 ITIS HOLDINGS AND TOYOTA ANNOUNCE FIRST UK COMMERCIAL RDS-TMC SERVICE ITIS Holding plc, the AIM listed telematics company specialising in driver services, announces today a significant three year contract with Toyota (GB) PLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, to supply traffic information content to a selected number of Toyota models via RDS-TMC (Radio Data System-Traffic Message Channel) in return for an annual licence fee. The contract signifies the first truly commercial service in the UK using the RDS-TMC which has been adopted as a standard by the automotive industry throughout Europe. Whilst the market for in-car navigation systems is increasing rapidly, aided by falling prices and the adoption of standard fit in certain models, the integration of real-time traffic information has long been seen as critical to providing dynamic routing. It adds significant 'user appeal' and benefits to the driver, who will now be aided in making informed choices about avoiding and re-routing around traffic congestion. ITIS' traffic information is collated from a combination of journalistic data and real time traffic information sources using its own FVD (floating vehicle data) network. This information is delivered directly into the vehicle's navigation system using RDS-TMC which is transmitted as data on national FM radio throughout the UK. ITIS secured the exclusive licence in January 2001 to broadcast this information on the sub-carrier of Classic FM, the UK's only national independent FM station. The received information is 'decoded' and then integrated into the navigation receiver, providing 'dynamic route guidance' as well as visual instructions. The delivery of data to the in-car system, rather than voice to a mobile telephone, has the added benefits of being safer for the user and cost effective as there is no line rental to pay. On commencing a journey a driver can select a route using the in-car navigation system and follow turn by turn directions along the route. The driver is then automatically updated with real time traffic information (specific to their route) allowing pre-emptive action to be taken by re-routing the journey in the event of accidents or other traffic congestion. Paul Philpott, Marketing Director, Toyota (GB) PLC said: ' The combination of our in-car navigation system and ITIS' high quality traffic content and delivery channel provides a major step forward in vehicle telematics. Our research shows navigation and route planning on its own is only half the solution. The provision of real time traffic information in a user friendly format is crucial. After carefully evaluating the various options we chose ITIS because we believe their quality content, in particular FVD, and their ability to deliver a UK wide service offers the most compelling solution to providing drivers with accurate, real time information that enables them to avoid traffic incidents using dynamic re-routing.' Stuart Marks, Chief Executive of ITIS Holdings, says: 'I am delighted that Toyota and ITIS will be working together to provide a groundbreaking telematics service for Toyota drivers. RDS-TMC not only provides an excellent channel for the cost effective, timely delivery of traffic information in the UK but also allows a seamless multi lingual service to be rolled out into continental Europe. ITIS, which currently has a strong cash balance of £ 24million, will continue to develop relationships with the key vehicle manufacturers and I believe this contract is a material step towards positioning ITIS at the forefront of the European telematics industry.'
