Electron completes first design phase of thermal processing system to turn waste plastic into hydrogen

Hydrogen Utopia International PLC (AQSE:HUI), a company pioneering non-recyclable waste plastics to hydrogen technology, is pleased to announce that Electron Technologies BV ("Electron"), the designer of HUI's unique thermal processing system for the  conversion of waste plastic into synthesis gas ("Syngas"), has now completed the first design phase of the system.  This includes the specifications defining the equipment that make up the system, process design, the control philosophy, the data sheets and safety assessments. Subject to evaluation of the results of the imminent low temperature reactor tests, a programme for the commencement of which was announced by HUI on 28 June 2022, the system documentation will now undergo a full design review before moving into the detailed design and manufacture stage.

The total thermal processing system consists of a low temperature reactor that pyrolyses the plastic in the absence of air at up to 500 ° C and a high temperature reactor that takes the gas up to over 850 ° C. Once the plastic waste has been converted to Syngas, the gas can then be cleaned, and hydrogen or methane extracted from it.

Keith Riley, Director of HUI, commented:

"It is very satisfying to see the new thermal processing system moving towards realisation. Once the low temperature reactor tests have been completed and the design review has been carried out later this month, we will only have the high temperature reactor tests to complete before the unit will be ready for detailed design and manufacture."

About Hydrogen Utopia International PLC

HUI aims to become one of the leading new European companies specialising in turning non-recyclable mixed waste plastic into carbon-free fuels, new materials or distributed renewable heat.

A HUI facility uses non-recyclable mixed waste plastic as feedstock and turns it into syngas from which new products and energy can be produced. HUI anticipates that its revenues will be derived from a variety of sources, dependent upon location and configuration of the HUI facilities, including the sale of Syngas, hydrogen and other gases, electricity and heat sales, and the payment to it of  fees for a given quantity of non-recyclable mixed waste plastic received at a HUI facility .

HUI will target areas where there is significant private sector interest or potential, financial backing is accessible and or where substantial EU and/or government funded sources of grants and loans are or may be available. The global increase in fossil fuel-based energy prices reinforces the need for alternative, price competitive energy sources, which HUI's business model can provide.

The pressing need to deal with growing amounts of waste plastic combined with a real momentum in the use of hydrogen from renewable sources may pave the way for a rapid deployment of and investment in HUI facilities.
