Hiscox plc (the 'Company') was notified on 16 January 2003 by Legal & General
Investment Management Limited ('LGIM') that following the Company's rights issue
in October 2002, and consequent to the purchase of 50,000 shares in the Company
by LGIM on 13 January 2003, LGIM is now interested in 8,697,745 ordinary shares
of 5p each, representing 3.01 per cent. of the issued share capital of the
Company.

The shares are registered in the following names:
