                         Statement re press speculation



The Board of UK COAL notes the press speculation over the weekend concerning Jon
Moulton and Alchemy.

UK COAL has had no written communication of any nature from either Mr. Moulton
or Alchemy. The approach received earlier this year was from a private property
company, although the Board believes Alchemy was associated with this approach.

As announced on 8 June 2005, having asked for clarification in relation to a
number of aspects of the approach and sufficient clarification not being
forthcoming, the Board of UK COAL terminated discussions.
