NON-EXECUTIVE BOARD ANNOUNCEMENT


The Board of UK COAL announces the appointment of Mr Garold (Gerry) Spindler
as a non-executive director and part time consultant to the company with
immediate effect.



Mr Spindler, US citizen aged 53, began his career in mining at Consolidation
Coal, one of America's largest coal mining companies based in Pittsburgh.  He
held various positions throughout the company, leaving in 1984 as Vice
President of Non-Mining operations.   More recently he has been President &
Chief Executive Officer at Pittston Mineral Group, where he led its flotation
on NYSE in 1993.



In 1995 he joined Cyprus Amax Coal Company, the second largest coal business
in the US as President of Coal Companies.  His main objectives were the
creation of a new strategy and the improvement of the operating performance of
the group.



Commenting on the appointment, John Robinson, Chairman of UK COAL, said:
