                               BOARD APPOINTMENT


The Board of UK COAL PLC ('UK COAL' or 'the Group') today announces the
appointment of Owen Michaelson as a non-executive Director of the Group with
effect from today.

Owen Michaelson (aged 40) is Corporate Development Director of the Peel Holdings
Group of companies, a substantial shareholder of UK COAL. He qualified as a
Chartered Surveyor in 1991, originally training with The Manchester Ship Canal
Company, which is part of the Peel Ports Group. He has specialised in the
remediation and development of brownfield and contaminated land, waste
management operations and power generation. He was elected to the main board of
Peel Holdings in April this year. He is a member of the DBERR Coal Forum and a
former Chair of the RICS Waste Policy Panel

David Jones, Chairman of UK COAL, commented:

There are no other matters in connection with the appointment of Owen Michaelson
to be disclosed under paragraph LR 9.6.13 R of the Listing Rules of the UK
Listing Authority.
