Barclays PLC, pursuant to Sections 198 to 208 of the Companies Act 1985,
advising that as at 5 November 2003, Barclays PLC, through thirteen legal
entities named in the notification, now has a notifiable interest in 40,691,907
ordinary shares of 25p in GUS.  This holding represents 4.02% of the issued
ordinary share capital of GUS.
