The Great Universal Stores P.L.C. has today received a notification dated 1 May
2001 from Barclays PLC, pursuant to Sections 198 to 208 of the Companies Act
1985, advising that, as at the date of their letter, Barclays PLC, though its
subsidiary Barclays Bank PLC, has a notifiable interest in 31,639,647 ordinary
shares of 25p each in this Company. This holding represents 3.14% of the issued
ordinary share capital of the Company.
