                             Trading update

The Chairman of Esporta plc, John Grieves, is making the following statement
at the Company's Annual General Meeting today:

'Overall, current trading conditions are similar to those prevailing at the
time we announced our preliminary results some 10 weeks ago.  Sales from
clubs open for the whole of 1999 have grown by 6 per cent in the first four
months of the year.  The three clubs opened this year - Edinburgh, Oxford
and Northampton - continue to perform well.'
