Purchase of Own Securities

On 31 July 2001, The Edinburgh Investment Trust plc bought back a further
290,000 ordinary shares for cancellation at a price of 447.0345p per share.
Following the buy back, there are 248,996,714 ordinary shares in issue. The
share buy-back will be financed out of the capital reserve.
