                         CHAIRMAN'S A.G.M. STATEMENT


At the Annual General Meeting held in Doncaster today, Executive Chairman
Graham Kirkham said:

'I am pleased to report that we have continued to trade well since our
preliminary announcement on 12 October, with both like-for-like delivered
sales and order intake in the first 17 weeks ahead of the comparable period
last year.  I therefore believe that we are well placed to achieve real sales
growth this year through our core of established stores.  Our first store in
Scotland, which opened in September, continues to exceed our expectations, and
five more new stores are scheduled to open throughout the UK before the end of
the second half.  Margins are continuing to benefit from higher volumes and
increased manufacturing participation.  I remain confident in our ability to
achieve further progress during our current financial year.'
