Board Appointments - Centrica

Centrica PLC 19 September 2000 Board Appointments, Centrica plc To support the continued growth and expansion of the Company, Centrica is pleased to announce that Mark Clare is to be appointed to the newly created position of Deputy Chief Executive. In this position, he will be responsible for the Centrica Financial Services Business and the Company's E-Commerce activities. To succeed him as Finance Director, we are also pleased to announce the appointment of Phillip Bentley who will join the Company as an Executive Director. Phillip is currently Finance Director, Guinness-UDV, the alcoholic beverages division of Diageo plc. Chairman, Sir Michael Perry, in welcoming Phillip Bentley to the Board said: 'These appointments bring further strength to the already successful executive team, and will ensure we have the capability to continue to deliver our strategy.' He was previously with STC plc, now part of the Northern Telecom group. He joined STC in 1989 as Finance Manager in the telecoms business, rising to Finance Director of STC Submarine Systems. Prior to STC plc, Mark spent ten years with GEC-Marconi. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Management Accountants. 2.Phillip Bentley,41, has been Finance Director of UDV since June 1999 and was recently appointed Finance Director of Guinness-UDV. Prior to that he was Group Treasurer and Director of Risk Management of Diageo plc from 1997 and Group Treasurer of Grand Metropolitan plc from 1995. Phillip was previously at BP, where he spent 15 years in senior financial roles both in the UK and overseas. An Oxford graduate, he has an MBA from INSEAD and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers. 3.Centrica's strategy has focused on developing relationships with its traditional gas customer base and successfully expanding into new products and services. These comprise electricity supply, telecommunications and home services under the British Gas and Scottish Gas brands, motoring services under the AA brand and insurance and financial services under the AA and Goldfish brands. The Company announced its first major step in delivering its international strategy with the acquisition of Direct Energy last month.
