Carillion secures £157 million Library of Birmingham contract

Carillion has been awarded a £157 million contract by Birmingham City Council to provide a new library for the city.

This prestigious project, which also includes the integration of Birmingham Repertory Theatre (The REP), will create new standards for libraries in the 21st Century and provide an exceptional resource for learning, information and culture.

Carillion will provide design and construction services for the project on which construction is due to begin in 2010 with completion by mid-2013.

This development, on land adjoining The REP, will see the theatre and library join together and will make a further important contribution to the regeneration of the City Centre's Westside and Centenary Square. New facilities will include an auditorium, meeting and conference rooms, plus a cafe and restaurant which will be for shared use by the library and theatre. Improvements will also be made to The REP's frontage and front-of-house facilities.

John McDonough, Carillion Chief Executive said: 'We are delighted to have been selected for this important contract, further enhancing our strong, long-term order book. We look forward to working with Birmingham City Council to deliver this prestigious project, which will provide state-of the art facilities for local people for decades to come.'
