Carillion PLC 06 February 2006 6 February 2006 Carillion is preferred bidder for £137 million road maintenance contract Support services and construction company Carillion has been appointed preferred bidder for a road maintenance contract in Canada worth £137 million over seven years. Carillion Canada Inc has been appointed preferred bidder by the Alberta Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation for five contract maintenance areas (CMAs). The five CMAs cover 5,670 equivalent two-lane kilometres of primary and secondary roads in the north east and central regions of Alberta, west of the Alberta/Saskatchewan border. Key elements of the seven-year contract, which starts in August 2006, include summer and winter road patrolling, wayside rest area maintenance, vegetation management, sign, fence and guardrail maintenance, traffic markings, 24/7 emergency traffic control and winter maintenance. This latest contract award consolidates Carillion's position as the largest private sector highway maintenance contractor in Canada. Carillion's chief executive John McDonough said: 'This contract represents a further significant step in development of our business in Canada, in line with our strategy of growing support services and PPP activities alongside a selective construction capability. Carillion is also providing two of the first PPP hospitals to be built in Canada, namely, the William Osler Hospital in Toronto and the Royal Ottawa Hospital, in which Carillion is committed to invest some £5.4 million of equity. In addition, these hospitals are expected to generate nearly £500 million of construction and facilities management turnover for Carillion.
