Carillion PLC 13 February 2003 13 February 2003 Carillion-WSP awarded MAC contract for Highways Agency Business and construction services company Carillion in a 60:40 joint venture partnership with WSP, has been awarded the Area 12 highway maintenance contract, worth up to £230 million - the second new MAC contract to be awarded to Carillion. This five-year Managing Agent Contractor contract (MAC), which is extendable to seven years, covers some 750 km of motorways and trunk roads in West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire and Derbyshire. MAC contracts involve working in close partnership with the Highways Agency to deliver innovative solutions that achieve high standards of maintenance and keep traffic moving on important routes across the network. In Area 12, Carillion-WSP will be responsible for providing network management, maintenance and improvements across some 750 km of motorways and trunk roads, including the M1 M62 and M621, which serve as commuter routes between major urban areas, as well as rural trunk roads such as the A64, a busy tourist route. A key feature of the service will be the provision of rapid response vehicles, which are deployed with the aid of satellite navigation, to enable them to reach incidents quickly and ensure that roads are opened as quickly as possible following incidents. Commenting on the award, Carillion Chief Executive John McDonough says: 'As transport is one of our key growth sectors, we are particularly pleased with the award of our second MAC contract. This success further consolidates our strong position in the highway maintenance market and reflects our commitment to technical innovation and high quality services focused on the needs of our customers. We therefore look forward to working closely with the Highways Agency in Area 12.' Notes to Editors Carillion, in partnership with URS, was awarded the UK's first MAC contract in 2001 for Area 8, covering over 1,000 km of motorway and trunk roads in the Home Counties and East Midlands. The new Area 12 includes sections of road network previously part of other Area maintenance contracts, including Area 16, in which Carillion was the Term Maintenance Contractor and WSP the Managing Agent. The scope of works in this new MAC contract Area 12 has also significantly increased, with works up to a capital value of £500,000 now included in the contract, where previously the threshold was £100,000.
