Carillion awarded £170 million Canadian highways maintenance contract

Leading support services company Carillion has been awarded a six-year highways maintenance contract by the Alberta Ministry of Transportation, estimated to be worth up to £170 million, including additional small works.

Under the contract, which is scheduled to run from July 2009 to 2015, Carillion will provide all routine and specific maintenance of the highway infrastructure. This new contract borders Carillion's existing highways maintenance contracts in Alberta, and comprises four Contract Maintenance Areas (CMAs). These include the equivalent of 3,800 kilometres of two-lane primary and secondary roads in the Central Region of Alberta, around the city of Edmonton and the communities of Leduc, Fort Saskatchewan, Stony Plain, Drayton Valley, Morinville, High Prairie and Athabasca, and include the province's industrial manufacturing area servicing Alberta's extensive oil industry and other communities

Carillion now maintains the equivalent of 16,000 kilometres of two-lane highway in Ontario and Alberta.

John McDonough, Carillion Chief Executive explained: 'This new contract is a significant addition to our highways maintenance business in Canada. It increases our share of the Alberta highways services market to around 30 per cent and confirms our position as the largest private sector highway maintenance contractor in Canada, with market leading positions in both Ontario and Alberta.'
