Pursuant to Section 198 of the Companies Act 1985, British American Tobacco
p.l.c. ("the Company") received on 23 January 2006 ("the Update Letter") a copy
of a notification from Barclays PLC dated 20 April 2005 ("the Original
Notification") that, as of 19 April 2005, Barclays PLC no longer had a
notifiable interest in the issued ordinary share capital of the Company. This
announcement is being made with reference to the Update Letter and the Company
confirms that, to the best of its knowledge and belief, it did not receive the
Original Notification in April 2005.
