British American Tobacco p.l.c. has been informed, by a letter dated 16 May 2003
received 19 May 2003, that with reference to the Company's share purchase
programme and the consequent reduction in the number of ordinary shares of 25p
in the Company ("the Shares") in issue, as at 14 May 2003 R & R Holdings SA had
a notifiable interest (for the purposes of Part VI of the Companies Act 1985) in
604,336,627 Shares representing 28.00% of the issued ordinary share capital of
2,158,175,677 Shares.



R & R Holdings SA is the registered holder of the number of Shares indicated
above.
