DIRECTORS' SHAREHOLDINGS

The Company was notified on 10 August 2004 by the trustee of the British
American Tobacco Employee Share Ownership Plan (the "Plan") that on 9 August
2004 the following directors had purchased ordinary shares of 25p each in
British American Tobacco p.l.c. (the "Shares") by way of the Partnership Share
Scheme at a price of 833.5p per Share
