North American Gas Position Boosted

BP Amoco PLC 11 November 1999 BP AMOCO BOOSTS NORTH AMERICAN GAS POSITION BP Amoco has strengthened its position as North America's number one gas producer through a $500 million deal. The company has agreed to purchase a significant part of Repsol-YPF's holding in Crescendo Resources, a major gas producer and processor in Texas and Oklahoma. Mr Richard Olver, Chief Executive of Exploration and Production at BP Amoco said: 'We see this as an opportunity to add immense strategic value. It improves our leadership position in gas in the 'Lower 48' states and we can anticipate further opportunities for strategic gas investments. 'This move will double BP Amoco's share of gas production from the Anadarko basin to 180 million cubic feet a day (mmcfd) as well as adding 15,000 barrels a day of liquids production. It demonstrates our commitment to increase our gas position through strategic acquisition as well as organic growth. Prior to combining with Amoco, BP's net gas production in the USA was just over 100 mmcfd. Our total combined US gas production is now around 2,400 mmcfd.' BP Amoco's growing momentum towards gas production increased following a review of the company's upstream portfolio after the merger with Amoco was completed. It further reinforces the company's move towards cleaner fuels in the energy mix. BP Amoco's worldwide gas production currently stands at more than 5,900 mmcfd, compared with BP's production of 1,500 mmcfd a year ago prior to the merger. Notes to Editors: Crescendo Resources, L.P. is a joint venture involved in the production of natural gas and NGLs in the Texas panhandle and western Oklahoma area of the Anadarko basin. BP Amoco holds 41 per cent interest and Repsol-YPF holds the remaining 59 per cent. Crescendo was created in 1997 and headquartered in Amarillo, Texas. Daily production is about 235 million cubic feet of natural gas and about 25,000 barrels of natural gas liquids. Crescendo has proved gas reserves of about 1.2 trillion cubic feet. Its assets include 5,500 wells, a 2,200 mile gathering system and two natural gas processing plants with a capacity of 230 million cubic feet of gas per day. The remaining part of Repsol-YPF's stake in Crescendo will be marketed in a package of assets in November. Petrie Parkman and Co are assisting Crescendo in this marketing effort. The BP Amoco/Repsol-YPF transaction is subject to Hart-Scott-Rodino approval and is targeted to close by end 1999.
