Purchase of Own Securities

Further to the announcement this morning of a repurchase by the Company of
40,000 ordinary shares, the Company announces that it has repurchased a
further 6,950,000 ordinary shares today at a price per share of 110.5p. 
10,357,000 ordinary shares have been purchased to date under the current
authority, given at the AGM on 25 February 2000 and the issued share capital
following cancellation of the shares repurchased will be 260,944,842 ordinary
shares.

Since 12 November 1999 when the Company first obtained powers to purchase its
own shares 42,855,000 shares have been repurchased.
