Purchase of Own Securities

Following the authority granted to the company on 12 November 1999 to
repurchase up to 45,266,176 shares (being 14.9% of its then issued ordinary
share capital), the company announces that it has today repurchased 910,000
ordinary shares.  The price paid for each share was 100.50p.

29,348,000 ordinary shares have been repurchased to date under this authority
and the number of shares in issue following cancellation of the shares
repurchased will be 274,451,842.
