Purchase of Own Securities

At General Meetings held this morning, holders of the company's ordinary
shares and of its 7.25% Convertible Unsecured Loan Stock 2003 granted the
company the power to repurchase up to 45,266,176 shares, being 14.9% of its
issued share capital.

Following that approval, the company has today repurchased 5,150,000 shares
(1.694% of its issued share capital).  The price paid for each share was 87p.
