The issuer has made the following amendment to the Purchase of Own Securities
announcement released on 28 February 2000 at 17:54 under RNS No 3482G.

The issued share capital is 269,301,842 and not 271,701,842 as previously
stated.

All other details remain unchanged.

Following the authority granted to the company on 12 November 1999 to
repurchase up to 45,266,176 shares (being 14.9% of its then issued ordinary
share capital), the company announces that it has today repurchased 2,000,000
ordinary shares.  The price paid for each share was 104p.

32,098,000 ordinary shares have been repurchased to date under this authority
and the number of shares in issue following cancellation of the shares
repurchased will be 269,301,842
