British Portfolio Trust plc announces that on 4 January 2008 it purchased, to be
held in treasury, 5,810 Ordinary Shares at 181p per share (representing 0.01% of
the issued ordinary capital).

Settlement of the purchased 5,810 Ordinary Shares is due on 9 January 2008.

Following the purchase and non-cancellation of the 5,810 Ordinary Shares, the
total number of Treasury shares held by the Company will be 2,241,164. The
issued share capital of the Company, less the total number of Ordinary Shares
held in Treasury, will be 41,347,800 Ordinary 1p Shares.
