Transaction in Own Shares

British Portfolio Trust plc announces that on 20 October 2006 it purchased,
1,197,333 Ordinary Shares at 176p per share (representing 2.85% of the issued
ordinary capital) for cancellation and 502,667 Ordinary Shares at 176p per share
(representing 1.20% of the issued ordinary capital) to be held in treasury.

Settlement of the purchased 1,700,000 Ordinary Shares is due on 25 October 2006.

Following the purchase for both cancellation and non-cancellation of the
Ordinary Shares, the total number of Treasury shares held by the Company will be
3,500,000. The issued share capital of the Company, less the total number of
Ordinary Shares held in Treasury, will be 40,338,669 Ordinary 1p Shares.
