British Portfolio Trust plc announces that on 6 September 2006 it purchased, for
cancellation, 30,000 Ordinary Shares at 171.75p per share (representing 0.07% of
the issued ordinary capital).

Settlement of the purchased 30,000 Ordinary Shares is due on 11 September 2006.

Following the purchase and cancellation of the 30,000 Ordinary Shares, the total
number of Treasury shares held by the Company will be 2,997,333. The issued
share capital of the Company, less the total number of Ordinary Shares held in
Treasury, will be 42,054,669 Ordinary 1p Shares.
